Mario Hat

I created this hat on the fly today at a fair. It was pretty quick to make. I made instructions as I recreated it at home so there are a few changes as I went. Notably I got rid of the 5” white round and was able to utilize the existing 260 white. Also, I’ve added a brim to the hat which you can ignore in a line situation and it still looks great.

As I look at this, it’s very similar to Don Caldwell’s Stitch hat base. Two things, 1. Don rocks and is an inspiration. 2. If you don’t have Mad Hats vol. 1 (or all of the them for that matter) get them. That is all.

350 Blush – Reverse inflate, 4” tail at the nozzle side

260 Blush – 4” tail

260 Chocolate Brown – Fully Inflated

260 White – 4” tail

350 Red – 4” tail

260 Red – 7” inflated in the middle.

350 Blush – starting from the end, twist off a round bubble for the nose..

Make a loop large enough for their head. The remainder will become the backing for the eyes

About 6” away from the nose in either direction, make a twist for the ear connection.

260 Blush – Make a 4” loop twist for the ear.

Connect loop twist to hat base at one of the twist points, make a 10” bubble and connect it 5” above the nose, 10” bubble to opposite twist point. Finish with a matching loop twist for other ear and discard the remainder.

350 Blush – at top connection point, finish with a pinch twist and discard remainder.

260 Chocolate Brown – twist nozzle into one ear. 11” bubble to top of head, 11” bubble to opposite ear. Snap off remainder and reserve a VERY soft 6” bubble for the mustache. Split mustache in half and secure it to the nose.

260 white – Connect nozzle to top of head. A bubble down to the nose. A matching bubble back to top of head.

Make a 4” loop at top and discard remainder.

260 Red - 7” inflated in the middle. Tie the two ends together to create a bend and discard excess uninflated balloon.

Secure uninflated knot behind the 350 pinch twist at the top of the head. Position bubble in front of white loop. This will create the brim of the hat.

350 Red – VERY soft. Secure nozzle to ear. Wrap across top of head and secure to opposite ear. Discard whatever you don’t need.

Squeeze the red 350 down between the 350 blush pinch twist and the white 260 loop.

Add the “M” on the front of the white 260 loop. Add eye artwork.

Enjoy!
